Snow helped to cut crime

HEAVY snowfall may have been a pain for motorists and businesses, but it had an unexpected benefit — deterring criminals.
Oldham Inspector Melita Worswick told Oldham Town Centre partnership members that crime levels had been reduced over Christmas as criminals struggled to get out in the snow.
A major area of concern is Bloom Street car park, a hot spot for theft. Extra officers have been on patrol to give crime prevention advice to motorists following a tally of 10 incidents in one day. Owners of parked cars with valuables on display were sent a letter warning them about the dangers of leaving things in the open.
Officers have also clamped down on youths trying to get into pubs, clubs and bars in the town centre with fake ID. A high-profile campaign was staged over Christmas with letters sent to parents and fake ID confiscated.
