TESCO workers from Oldham employed at the Stakehill Industrial Estate are entering negotiations over their future.
The supermarket giant has announced the closure of the the regional Middleton distribution centre, where 620 staff are employed by Wincanton.
Tesco is opening a new distribution centre at Widnes to serve stores in the North-West.
All 620 Wincanton staff at Middleton will be offered the opportunity to work at the new facility. Staff will be eligible to transfer to Tesco, or Stobart’s, which will run the site’s transport operation.
Replacing the depot currently operated by Wincanton, the new, fresh-food facility in Cheshire will provide an increased capacity to serve a growing network of stores across the region, as well as enhanced staff facilities and environmental benefits, says Tesco’s corporate affairs manager Juliette Bishop.
