Burglar foiled by PCSOs
Date published: 18 February 2010
A BUNGLING burglar was collared when he targeted a house — unaware that a police meeting was going on close by.
The hapless break-in triggered an alarm in Rochdale Road, Royton, which alerted Police Community Support Officers at near-by Tandle View Court.
The PCSOs were warning elderly residents about bogus callers when the drama unfolded.
PCSO Kieran Jones — in only his first month on the beat — followed a man spotted walking away down an alley, while colleague Sue Hoyle stayed at the house.
Two police officers then arrived to arrest the man who has been bailed on suspicion of burglary.
Jewellery taken in the break-in has not been traced, but empty boxes were found.
Inspector Karen Taylor, from Royton and Shaw Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “This is a great result for the team and shows the dedication and teamwork of all the officers involved, and especially that of the PCSOs.”
