MEERKATS are set to take over Dr Kershaw’s hospice to help raise much-needed funds.

And a sample clutch of the cuddly creatures, dressed in striking red, blue and green smoking jackets, are already making themselves at home in the grounds of the Royton hospice.

As part of its fundraising efforts, 300 toy animals will be winging their way to Dr Kershaw’s at the end of March.

The samples of the cheeky chaps are proving so popular that orders are already being placed by fans wanting their very own miniature mammal.

Brian Hurst, hospice fundraiser, said: “We sell a wide variety of the furry toys and the company which produces them came up with the idea of the cuddly meerkats.

“People who have seen our sample meerkats have loved them and have already put orders in. They should fly off the shelves.”

The toys, available from April 1, retail at £7.99 and can be ordered by calling 0161-624 9984.

Meerkats have shot to fame thanks to a television advertisement promoting a insurance comparison website.
