Police crime blitz: arrests well into three figures
Date published: 19 February 2010
Suspects wanted for violent offences were given a wake-up call they won’t forget this morning as police carried out warrants across Oldham.
Greater Manchester Police launched Operation Portcullis, with raids across every division from 6am.
By 10am, 126 arrests had been made — one for attempted murder, and two in Oldham. Progress is being updated minute by minute on the force’s Twitter site (www.twitter.com/gmpolice).
Police are hunting down criminals responsible for alcohol-fuelled violent assaults and those who have jumped bail and are on the run. Officers will also be out tonight in Oldham town centre working with the licensing trade to highlight their role to promote responsible drinking and making sure they stick to their licences.
In Manchester city centre, safety arches will be used to stop people carrying weapons on nights out and drugs dogs will be detect any illegal substances.
Greater Manchester Police Assistant Chief Constable Terry Sweeney said: “Today we have sent out a powerful message to people who are suspected of getting involved in nasty attacks.
“Alcohol is often a major cause of aggression and results in innocent people being subjected to violent and unprovoked assaults.
“Not only are we removing troublemakers from the streets, but we’re also encouraging people to look after themselves by pacing their drinks, staying with their friends, and using safe transport.
“My message is simple — I don’t want to see anyone spoiling everybody else’s fun by being drunk and causing trouble. If you do see trouble, walk away.
“Today, a significant number of arrests will be made. This is just the start of an on-going process that will see Greater Manchester Police continually target those responsible for violent crime until the message sinks in.”
The operation is being supported by Greater Manchester Police’s Think Safe, Drink Safe campaign to encourage sensible drinking.
