UNPAID carers in Oldham will soon be given a helping hand to secure their own financial future while caring for a loved one.

Under new Government plans, those caring for a family member will be able to build up a full basic state pension based entirely on National Insurance credits.

The Carers’ Credit scheme, starting in April, will give Oldham’s 23,524 carers a chance to apply for help boosting their savings.

Angela Eagle, Minister of State for Pensions, said: “The state pension is everyone’s foundation of financial security in later life.

“Therefore, it’s only right that caring for others should be counted towards it.”

The Department for Work and Pensions and Carers UK is now urging Oldham’s hidden carers to come forward and benefit from the change, if dedicating at least 20 hours a week to an ill or disabled loved one.

For the first time, the caring-based credit will directly count towards basic and second state pensions, which could give peace of mind to the 12,260 Oldhamers currently juggling paid work and care.

Imelda Redmond, chief executive of Carers UK, said: “There are simple steps you can take to protect your long-term future as you care for others.”

A recent poll revealed that less than one in five carers pays regularly into a savings account. Only one in seven felt they had a comfortable amount put aside for the future.
