Bobby on the beat

A FUND-RAISING police officer is going the extra mile on Sunday — running a half-marathon around Oldham dressed as a chicken.

Royton Special Constable Bobby Crabb and friend Ged O’Tool will be sporting the yellow feathered costumes in a bid to raise money for Look, a charity which helps visually impaired children.

He said: “I have a little boy myself and I love doing things like this to help children.”

Mr Crabb has already pledged to raise £1,300 for the charity by running the London Marathon on April 25.

After securing sponsorship from C&A Motors in Royton and Detect All Alarms, Oldham, he is keen to involve the public before tackling the 26-mile race.

“We’re going into pubs and shops and hope the public will hand over cash for charity,” he added.

The two runners will start in Middleton at 11am and run via Chadderton. After passing the Boat and Horses pub and following Broadway, the pair will then make their way through Royton, on to High Crompton, Shaw and back to Middleton.

Despite being no stranger to a gruelling training schedule, having run the London Marathon in 2008, Mr Crabb said: “It’s going to be really hot and hopefully we’ll be running with buckets full of money, so I think that will be the hardest part.

“I have worn a similar costume before but I was at a party, not running 13 miles.” To support the runners visit www.justgiving.com/bobby-crabb.
