Special chance for wannabe cops
Date published: 24 February 2010
Police are on the look-out for extra special residents to help them tackle crime and anti-social behaviour in their community.
The Oldham West Neighbourhood Policing Team is holding an event at the Honeywell Centre, Ashton Road, tomorrow, between 7 and 9pm in a bid to recruit new special constables.
Insp Alan Humphries, of the Oldham West Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Special constables are a vital extra resource in helping us reassure communities and keeping our streets safe.
“By becoming a special constable or a police volunteer, residents can play a key part in the fight against crime and anti-social behaviour and work with us to make their neighbourhood a safer place to live and work.
“I encourage anyone who has an interest in police work, voluntary work, or just wants to give something back to their neighbourhood to come along to this event and find out more.”
Special constables are volunteers who give up their free time to work alongside full-time police officers to detect and investigate crime, patrol hotspot areas and build relationships with the local community.
They normally work a minimum of four hours per week.
