United stewards in court transfer

Two Manchester United stewards accused of breaking the legs of a Manchester City fan during the Premier League derby at Old Trafford may have their trial heard outside the city.

Mark Roberts (46), of George Street, Shaw, and Paul Stringer (45), of Grange Way, Runcorn, deny charges of causing grievous bodily harm.

At Minshull Street Crown Court, Manchester, lawyers for the prosecution and defence asked the case be transferred to Stafford Crown Court because they argued United or City fans may sit on the jury which might prejudice any verdict.

The case was adjourned until April 9 for legal discussions to take place over the location for the trial.

But Judge Stephen Dodds warned: “I am sure there are a lot of City and United supporters in Stafford as well.”

The fan was caught smoking in the ground during a dramatic game which ended 4-3 to United on September 20.

He was allegedly pushed down a flight of stairs, breaking both his legs, while being ejected.

Roberts and Stringer were remanded on unconditional bail.
