GREENFIELD jazz singer Ella Rooke is returning home for a charity gig for Saddleworth Cancer Research UK at Dobcross Band Club on Friday, March 19.

The 24-year-old won sponsorship for a UK tour as the youngest singer the Arts Council had ever promoted.

And since 2001, she has pursued a career as a professional vocalist, performing at various venues including Ronnie Scott’s and the 606 Club, headlining events at the Vortex and the National Beauty Awards 2008.

Her festival appearances have included Cheltenham, the Riverfront and Marlborough.

Described by Jazz UK magazine as “an impressive and an extremely accomplished singer”, Ella was first taught music at the age of eight by the great jazz pianist Nikki Iles, later playing with various ensembles at the Oldham Music Centre.

Ella later went on to study as a vocalist at Trinity College of Music, London. Working with Anita Wardell, Trudy Kerr and Tina May helped Ella develop her own distinctive style.

People may remember Ella’s performances to packed houses at Uppermill Civic Hall at Jazz for Africa evenings. She’s now lending her support for cancer research, backed by a band of fine musicians. You can hear previews on www.myspace.com/ellarooke

Tickets (£10) for Ella’s Cancer Research gig, which includes a potato pie supper, can be obtained at Dobcross Band Club, Uppermill Post Office or by calling Mary on (01457) 875383.
