CONGRATULATIONS and praise have been given by a government minister to pupils, staff and governors at Failsworth School over their GCSE results.

Diana Johnson MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Schools, praised the school’s “commitment and hard work” which led to last year’s “positive and encouraging” exam results.

In a letter to new headteacher John Meagher, she said: “The efforts to increase attainment at your school is reflected in the improved exam results and this is something that you should all be proud of.

“I would like to take this opportunity to recognise the good progress that you have clearly made.”

She added that the school’s improved results were due to the dedication of teachers and hard work of pupils.

Mr Meagher, who took up his post last month, said: “The letter is testimony to the good work at the school and pupils working together to achieve fantastic results.

“All staff were made aware of it and it has been posted on our website for parents to read.

“We regularly have celebration assemblies to share good news with pupils, and they are very proud.

“Obviously, the school has moved forward over time, and we are looking at continuing this improvement.”

Mr Meagher said the letter was sent to Failsworth School as national tables had ranked it the 36th most-improved school in the country.

He is now certain that pupils are set to break the Failsworth School’s GCSE records at the end of the school year.

He said: “Judging by exam results the current Year-11s have already got in the bag, we are expecting record results in the summer.

“I’m 99.9 per cent certain we will meet the targets.”
