Mother’s Day gift with a difference

CANCER Research is hoping Oldham families will give a Mothers’ Day treat with a difference — a three-mile walk or run to raise funds to fight the disease.

Mums will be opening presents on Sunday, March 14, and the charity wants some of the gifts to be entries to the annual Race for Life all-women event.

Cancer Research says the feel-good factor will last far longer than gifts of chocolates and flowers.

Race for Life is the UK’s largest women-only fundraising event where all the money raised goes to fund Cancer Research UK’s lifesaving work.

The Oldham race is on July 18 at 11am.

When Race for Life started 16 years ago, many people diagnosed with cancer did not survive — now the overall death rate is down 15 per cent.

Hannah Thomas, Oldham event manager, said: “Mothers’ Day is the perfect opportunity to show your mum how much you care. By securing places to take part in Race for Life, you will able to cherish time spent fundraising, training and taking part together.

“Race for Life in Oldham has an unforgettable atmosphere with local women of all ages, shapes, sizes and fitness abilities coming together to make a positive difference to the lives of people touched by cancer. “They motivate and inspire each other to compete with many simply walking round, chatting and having fun.”

More than 400 women have already signed up and organisers are hoping that 2,500 women will help hit a fundraising target of £118,800.
