New flashing warning signs will be going up across Oldham’s roads to slow speeders or warn of dangers.
Work on installing the signs, costing £80,000, will begin later this month at sites suggested by councillors and neighbourhood managers.
The first block of vehicle-activated signs will warn of speed hazards in Buckstones Road, Shaw; Rochdale Road and Turf Lane, Royton; Roundthorn Road, Alt; and Westminster Road and Lord Lane in Failsworth.
Hazard warnings will go up in Mossley Road, Friezland; Oldham Road, Lydgate; Hollins Road, Plato Street, and Middleton Road, Oldham; and Rochdale Road, Shaw.
The signs are powered by wind and solar power, and are part of the council’s priority investment programme. Maintenance for the first five years is built into the costs.
Councillor Brian Lord said: “There are many roads that do not meet the criteria for major traffic-calming schemes but it is still felt by local citizens that there is still a need for some sort of additional warning.”
