CELEBRATIONS will be held tonight for young people who have contributed to their communities in a positive way.

Oldham Council’s Integrated Youth Services will be holding its fifth annual Young People Excel (YPXL) event at the Queen Elizabeth Hall.

The celebration evening will include performances by over 200 children and young people from Oldham College, Oldham Sixth-Form College, Sports Development, the Integrated Youth Service and various voluntary, dance and music groups from across the borough.

The Mayor of Oldham, Councillor Jim McArdle, will open the event which will showcase how young people are helping to improve their neighbourhoods.

Council leader Howard Sykes, who will attend, said: “The YPXL event allows us as adults the opportunity to recognise and celebrate the excellent work that young people do in the community.

“Today’s children and young people are our future employers, citizens and community leaders so it’s fantastic that we can start to reward their hard work now.

“It also provides youngsters with an opportunity to display to their parents and leading decision makers within the borough, their potential, which we need to nurture and support.
