Blue bins proving popular
Date published: 08 March 2010
THOUSANDS of blue bins are set to be delivered to Oldham households as residents back the borough’s recycling push.
Since the end of January, 25,000 residents have requested a new blue bin, for paper and cardboard recycling, from Oldham Council, bringing the total number of requests to 33,500.
Deliveries are expected to take until May to complete.
In paper and card alone, recycling rates have increased from 430 tonnes to 770 tonnes a month — helping Oldham to leap from bottom to third place in Greater Manchester’s green table.
Councillor Mark Alcock, cabinet member for environment and infrastructure, said: “The council launched the blue bins scheme in response to requests from residents.
“Since then, the number of people asking for them has been phenomenal.
“It just goes to show that householders across the borough are committed to recycling.”
