Metrolink to benefit cyclists

CYCLISTS can enjoy improved facilities as the Metrolink network expands across Greater Manchester.
Plans to revamp parking and storage on the network have been submitted to Greater Manchester Integrated Transport Authority’s (GMITA) Capital Projects Committee.
Under the plans, existing stops on the Eccles and Bury Metrolink lines, plus those currently being built as part of the Metrolink extensions and each of the new Park and Ride sites, will have cycle parking facilities where appropriate.
In addition, provision for cycle parking will also be incorporated into the designs of new bus stations across the region, including those at Rochdale, Altrincham, Bolton and Wythenshawe.
Oldham Councillor Richard Knowles, Chair of the Capital Projects Committee, said: “The proposals are very welcome and reflect our commitment to developing and improving integration on the city region’s public transport network.
“Cycling has become increasingly popular in recent years and the provision of enhanced cycle facilities at Metrolink stops, Park and Ride sites and bus stations will open up new opportunities for cyclists to connect with public transport.”
Enhancements to cycle provision at existing bus stations will be considered on a case by case basis in conjunction with the relevant local authority taking into consideration available space, CCTV coverage and appropriate safe access routes.
