THE “game of the masses” is increasing in popularity in Oldham thanks to the dedication of volunteers and fresh funding.
Following on from the first Kabaddi Tourna- ment in Oldham in November last year, Outta Skool held a second Kabaddi Showcase last month and is planning a third event in May.
Over the last six months, more than 70 young people aged from 12 to 19 from around Oldham have had the opportunity to learn to play Kabaddi and then showcase their skills. The young people represented Oldham schools, sports clubs and youth organisations.
It’s been made possible through the dedication of the Outta Skool volunte- ers and funding from Voluntary Action Oldham.
Outta Skool volunteer Abul Chowdhury said: “Small organisations like us depend on external funding to deliver projects.
“The funding received from Voluntary Action Oldham was crucial for this project, without which it would not have happened, and we would like to thank them.”
The centuries-old game is a team sport that originated in South Asia and is often referred to as the “game of the masses” due to its popularity in Asia and its simple format. No sophisticated equipment is required to play the game.
Two teams of between five and seven players occupy opposite halves of the play area and take turns sending a “raider” into the other half in order to win points by tagging or wrestling members of the opposing team.
The raider then tries to return to his own half without being caught while chanting the word Kabaddi throughout while holding their breath.
The tag version can be enjoyed by anyone from as young as ten to adults. The full contact is recommended to anyone who enjoys rugby or other contact sports.
Anyone interested in taking part in the May event, with coaching available if required, can contact Outta Skool on 07713 647494 for further details.
