School on the right path

Youngsters at a Failsworth school can enjoy their nature and outdoor studies again — thanks to a Royton firm.

Standing surface water had been a major problem for everyone at South Failsworth School in Paddock Lane until Derek Andrews introduced porous paving.

Derek’s company, A&B Drains, was called in when an ornamental path, used by the pre-school toddlers for outdoor activities, was constantly flooded.

Derek explained: “Failsworth is notorious for always being wet — the area stands on clay and drainage is a real issue.

“This ornamental path was constructed mainly of bark, which looked very nice but wasn’t really fit for purpose.”

A&B Drains won a contract to solve the problem and the school authorities were so impressed they asked the company to look at other paths within the school grounds.

The school has a path into a wooded area where pupils enjoy nature walks — but this was also affected by flooding problems.

Said Derek: “Since the utilities companies began charging for surface water discharge, the school needed to think about an alternative to Tarmac or concrete.

“Our solution provides the alternative — porous paving.

“There are different applications but we have used them for footpaths at the school.

“They are pleasing to the eye and blend in well with the surrounding area.

“This isn’t new technology but a new use which keeps the children’s feet dry and saves the school money.”
