On patrol to help the toad population
Date published: 22 March 2010
TOADS in Saddleworth will get a helping hand to cross the road so they can reach their breeding pond safely.
The council’s parks and countryside service will stage Toad Patrol for the next two weeks.
Staff will join local volunteers at Tanners Mill in Greenfield and Kiln Green in Diggle.
With the support of the local community it is estimated 5,000 toads have been helped across the road since 2005.
Councillor John McCann, Cabinet Member for Community Services and Housing, said: “We need to be there due to the nature of the toad.
“Toads cannot jump very far so they are unable to avoid moving vehicles and are consequently squashed. This is a disaster for the species as one female can spawn up to 2,000 eggs.”
Toads have been classed as being ‘of principal importance’ in the national Biodiversity Action Plan.
The council has identified four breeding ponds in the area but members of the public are being asked to get in touch if they know of any more or where toads hibernate across the borough.
