Dovestone plans unveiled

SHORT and long-term plans for Dovestone Reservoir were revealed to Saddleworth Parish Council by the Royal society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) — including a possible new visitor centre at the site within the next five years.
The plans were presented by Roy Taylor, Peak District area manager for the RSPB, after months of public consultation.
Short-term plans include refurbishment of the toilets, electronic barriers to curb anti-social behaviour and increased staff to provide visitors with more information.
Councillor Ken Hulme questioned whether or not staff would be deployed at night to combat increasing anti-social behaviour, adding: “What concerns me is that if you put facilities in it will attract people, but having the staff there at night would provide order.”
Mr Taylor argued that it was not the RSPB’s responsibility to police possible criminal behaviour taking place in the grounds at night.
He said: “I think you are wrong, we can’t take on the world but by investing in the site you make a difference and people will feel ownership and pride in the area.”
Councillor John Hudson welcomed the idea of a new centre combining the sailing club, an education space and a small cafe.
He said: “If it’s looked after I think it will attract the right people. A new visitor centre where people can ask questions, that will be the key to people enjoying Dovestone.”
