HAPPY returns . . . Doris is 100 today
KEEPING busy is the key to a long and healthy life for Doris Sledge who celebrates her 100th birthday today.
Doris was born in Chadderton and spent her early years at the Hare and Hounds pub where her great-grandfather Joseph Stansfield was landlord.
She caught pneumonia at eight-years-old and lost all her hair but her mum Fanny had to leave her with relatives to tend to her father Ernest who had been injured at war.
Doris was a girl guide at Christ Church in Chadderton and she later married her husband Tom there in 1936. The couple had a daughter, Eileen, in 1943.
The family moved to Failsworth where Doris joined St John’s Church and school as a dinner lady.
When Tom died, Doris kept herself occupied at local community centre groups and took up sequence dancing.
Doris moved to Oakville Park in Harrogate four years ago to be nearer to her daughter.
She will celebrate her birthday with Eileen, three grandchildren, two great grandchildren and four step great-grandchildren.
