A SHAW schoolboy has won first prize in regional young letter writers’ competition run by the Royal Mail.
George Newsome (11), a pupil at Rushcroft Primary School, Trent Road, scooped the top award in the Special Achievement category of the competition which asked pupils to write to their First Class Hero.
The category recognised children who have additional needs or who have overcome particular difficulties to enter the competition.
George, who has cerebral palsy, wrote a letter to his mum and impressed the judging panel with his inspirational and optimistic writing and by focusing on his mum as a heroine.
As well as receiving a certificate, George won a £50 book token, a set of special stamps and £75-worth of writing equipment for his school.
Fellow pupils Callum Morrison (eight) and Luke Shaw (eight) received a stamp presentation pack each for being shortlisted in the same category.
Estelle Baillie, from the Royal Mail, presented George with his prizes and congratulated all the children on their achievements.
She said: “The standard of entries was extremely high, which makes their achievement all the more impressive. Nationwide over 13,000 children took part so they should feel very proud.”
