Schools united in song for children’s charity

SINGING in unity . . . children at the event
PRIMARY school pupils were in fine voice to impress a large audience and raise money for charity.
Ten schools from Royton and Shaw took part in the Singing in Unity for the Community event at the Queen Elizabeth Hall.
It was part of a series of events to strengthen links between the schools and promote community spirit.
Children spent six weeks learning a number of songs with the support of the National Sing Up initiative. A spokeswoman said: “The children have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity of singing together and preparing to perform to a large audience.”
More than 400 children performed and were supported by two local bands and a choir.
The concert raised £1,000 for the Royal Oldham Hospital Children’s Unit to purchase toys and equipment to make children’s time in hospital more comfortable.
Jaid Flatley and Beth Mottram, from St Mary’s Year 4 class, said: “It has been very good because we have learned new songs and have made friends with people we’ve never met before.”
