Recycling award ...it’s in the can! Waste bosses were on to a winner when they entered the awards for sustainable environments.
The Oldham-based Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority won the award, presented by the Local Government Chronicle magazine in London.
The authority was also highly commended in the innovation category.
The LGC awards mark exceptional efforts being made to improve local communities.
The waste authority has signed a £3.8 billion contract with Viridor Laing, which will deal with recycling and waste management over the next 25 years, creating a network of state of the art recycling facilities.
It is the most complex waste management contract of its kind in Western Europe.
Part of the work involved the complete refurbishment of Oldham’s Arkwright Street recycling centre and waste transfer station for Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority.
And Oldham will get new plants to create green fuels, using waste which is left after composting and recycling.
Councillor Neil Swannick, authority chairman, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to win the award for sustainable environment.
“This is a remarkable achievement and also to be highly commended is an added bonus, in recognition of the world class technologies being developed through the project.”
