St Mary’s school, Greenfield, had double cause to celebrate as two groups of pupils scooped trophies..

Guitarists from the school bagged first prize in the ensemble section of the Rochdale Music Festival after less than a year as an ensemble.

Proud guitar tutor Hazel Davies watched her students win with a rendition of “Love Me Tender” by Elvis Presley among their contest pieces.

She said: “They were absolutely over the moon. They were really nervous, but were great once they got on the stage. I felt very proud.”

Elsewhere in the school, children taking part in the annual home safety quiz were also celebrating after walking away with the trophy after scoring an impressive 40 out of 50.

Parish councillors presented the children with their prizes in front of a packed assembly, congratulating them on answering questions many of the adults present found tough.

Hey With Zion came joint second with Friezland Primary in the quiz testing the children’s knowledge on areas such as firework safety and household hazards.
