A town centre designer-clothes store is leading the way in showing retailers’ support for the armed forces – by offering service personnel a discount.
Demolition in Yorkshire Street, Oldham, is the first to sign up to a scheme to offer the reduction on production of a military ID card.
It’s the idea of the Oldham Town Centre Partnership, and town centre manager Mark Lester is keen to hear from other businesses offering a discount or keen to start.
Oldham Council’s deputy leader, Councillor Jackie Stanton, said: “It is fantastic that even during difficult trading times there is still the will to demonstrate support for local members of the armed forces when they return to Oldham on leave or between postings.
“This issue was raised and agreed at the last meeting of the Town Centre Partnership and we are now communicating with traders so that we can put together a comprehensive list of those willing to support our service personnel in this way.”
Demolition owner Nicola Whitehead said: “With many young Oldhamers serving in the armed forces, offering a discount when they are home is a way in which we can show our support to what they are doing and I am happy to be involved.”
Any business that offers a service discount should contact Mark Lester on 0161-770 5009 or e-mail mark.lester@oldham.gov.uk so that the information can be put on on the council website.
