helping by walking: some of Help for heroes fundraisers
AROUND 140 people donned army fatigues for a beer walk in aid of the injured soldiers’ charity Help for Heroes.
The fund-raising total is still being totted up after they fell in for the parade around 11 Chadderton pubs
The revellers started and finished at the Sportsman, Broadway, which drafted in a military jeep and was decked out in army nets.
It also rounded off the day with a disco for those who were not too foot sore while the The Washbrook Tavern, Block Lane, provided free food for the weary walkers. Last year’s inaugural event was held in memory of local businessman Ian Butterworth who died in 2008.
It is now planned to make it an annual fixture and Jacqueline Hey, one if the organisers, said: “The turn-out was absolutely fantastic. The weather did not stop anybody, there was no trouble and a wide range of people aged from 18 to 60 took part.
“A massive thanks to everybody who donated, we really appreciate it.”
