A DEVASTATED mum has hit out at hospital staff after she was unable to see her baby’s body for four days after his death.
Sughran Bibi (32) said: “Losing a child is a horrendous experience that is impossible to describe, so the last thing you need is complications making it harder.”
Sughran, of Cotton Mill Crescent, Werneth, added: “The time between Taimoor’s death and being allowed to see his body was terrible. I wouldn’t want any other family to have to go through it. “
A spokesman for the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital in Swinton, said that Sughran was able to see her baby as soon as was humanly possible and the delay was because of problems with the water system in the mortuary.
Sughran called an ambulance when she found nine-month-old Taimoor Ahmed was not breathing after she went to wake him following a nap on Tuesday, March 23.
Paramedics’ attempts to revive the baby failed and his body was taken to the morgue at the Royal Oldham Hospital before being transfered to the new children’s hospital in Manchester for a post mortem examination.
Sughran, who also has a three-year-old son, contacted the mortuary two days later to see if she could visit to see Taimoor’s body and start to make funeral arrangements.
But staff told her it was not possible because there was a problem with the water system.
Sughran said that she was allowed to visit on Saturday, March 27, and made arrangements for Taimoor’s funeral on April 6.
“I had lots of family staying over while they waited for the funeral so it was a really stressful time.
“Taimoor was born on a Tuesday, died on a Tuesday and buried on a Tuesday.”
A spokesman for the hospital said the body was not brought to the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital until the Thursday and problems with the water system forced the mortuary’s closure until the following day when the family was allowed to see the body.
The spokesman added: “While the mortuary area was temporarily unavailable for approximately 24 hours between March 25 and 26, this did not affect the two viewing facilities for bereaved relatives.
“If the family have any concerns, we would encourage them to contact us directly.”
