Asbestos alert
Date published: 15 April 2010
Urgent warnings are being issued in Delph for residents to be on the lookout for bags of rubble which could be contaminated with asbestos.
The tightly wrapped bags were discovered on the public footpath between Oldham Road and Stoneswood Road.
Councillor Ken Hulme raised the alarm when he came across the potentially dangerous waste.
He said: “This kind of behaviour is not just anti-social, it is criminal and morally reprehensible.
What if a child would have touched it, or a dog ripped it open, it is dangerous stuff.”
The discovery highlighted the point that the council does not have an on-call 24 hour environmental emergency team.
The bags were eventually removed by Street Scene.
