Delays warning over M60 works

Date published: 15 April 2010

DRIVERS are being warned about an eight-month resurfacing scheme by the Highways Agency on the M60.

The scheme, between junctions 19 at Middleton and 23 at Ashton and including junction 22 Oldham, starts on May 7.

The project affects six miles of carriageway in both directions and is due to be completed in December.

The majority of the work will take place between 9pm on Friday evenings and 5am on Monday mornings when traffic volumes are lighter and disruption to drivers can be kept to a minimum.

Work will be avoided during Bank Holidays and when there are any significant events that would create heavy traffic.

During weekend closures, the motorway will remain open with two lanes operating in each direction using a contraflow. A 40 mph speed restriction will be in place through the works, with average speed cameras in operation.

Some overnight work will also be needed on the central reservation between 9pm and 5am which will require occasional lane closures and a temporary 50mph speed restriction.

Entry and exit slip roads will need to be closed occasionally.

Drivers make way for the new trams

Drivers face temporary traffic lights and a one way system while work gets under way on the old railway bridge at Washbrook, Chadderton.

The work is part of the conversion of the line for the new Metrolink tram service between Manchester, Oldham and Rochdale.

The new tram lines are part of a £600 million expansion of the network, which will also take trams to East Manchester, Ashton, Chorlton and Salford.

Trams will run to Central Park, off Oldham Road, Manchester, by spring 2011, Oldham Mumps by autumn 2011 and Rochdale by spring 2012.
