A retired teacher from Grotton will be returning to her old stamping ground to support Oldham’s Race for Life event in July — thanks to the Chronicle.

Susan Morgan has been successfully treated for cancer and, to say thank-you to all the people who helped in her care and recovery, she is volunteering at the Alexandra Park event on July 18.

Just up the road is her old school, Alexandra Park Juniors, where she taught for 36 years.

Susan (63) said: “The whole area has fond memories for me and I know the course well.

“I have become a volunteer at the Oldham event, and I’m also taking part in the Cancer Research Race for Life at Arley Hall in Northwich on July 4.

“I saw a story in the Chronicle asking for volunteers to promote and publicise the event for Cancer Research and felt I would like to do something.”

Susan, who had endometrial cancer, was treated at St Mary’s Hospital in Manchester, but also had various scans and biopsies at the Royal Oldham.

Susan added: “I’m still going for check ups and the prognosis is very good.

“They never say cured, but I am 90 per cent plus, and so I wanted to give something back and taking part seemed the best way.

“One of the reasons I wanted to do something was when I realised the number of people involved in getting me better.

“I was amazed at how many people must have been involved, from the GP, scans, examinations, biopsy, research and down to the ladies who brought the tea round, who were all so nice.

“I have never been ill or been in hospital before, and became so aware of them.

“Another reason is that when I had my diagnosis, what was most encouraging was to hear from someone else with the same condition, and if someone remembers about me I may encourage other people with cancer.”

Susan is getting in training to walk the three-mile course by lacing up her hiking boots.

Last year, 2,635 women walked, jogged or ran Race for Life in Oldham and raised £128,574.

This year, more than 900 participants have already signed up and organisers are hoping that 2,500 women will help hit a fundraising target of £118,800.
