Flags fly high across borough
OLDHAMERS are flying the flag with pride across the borough today to mark St George’s Day.
Celebrations in Oldham were officially launched when the St George’s Cross was raised at the Civic Centre.
Representatives from the scouts, brownies and guides were on hand to help hoist the flag with civic dignitaries, including the Mayor and Mayoress of Oldham, Councillor Jim McArdle and Councillor Kay Knox, Oldham Youth Mayor Mohammed Adil, the leaders of the three political parties, and Chief Supt Tim Forber, from Greater Manchester Police.
And there were celebrations too at the Spring Vale pub in Chadderton who went the extra mile and painted the English flag on the pub itself.
Flags also flew inside the pub and out to celebrate England’s patron saint.
A DJ will entertain regulars today as Englishmen everywhere celebrate all that’s great about England.
