THOUSANDS of Oldhamers were caught up in the wave of patriotism to celebrate St George’s Day at the weekend.

Flags and bunting filled communities across the borough as both young and old took part in a whole host of celebrations.

An action-packed weekend was filled with all manner of activities from litter picking and community plays, to a Viking invasion.

On Friday, youngsters from Mayfield Primary School took to the streets of Derker for a St George’s Day litter pick.

Organised by the council’s Streetscene department, the event was held to teach youngsters about the benefit of keeping their community clean.

Royton, Shaw and Crompton District Partnership hosted a St George’s Day community event at Royton and Crompton School, Blackshaw Lane, on Saturday, one of many across the borough.

Attractions included a Viking camp and crafts, fairground stalls and an inflatable pirate ship.

Chadderton residents also enjoyed a St George’s Day event at Apfel Lane neighbourhood community room on Saturday. Children acted out a St George’s Day play and a wide variety of stalls, refreshments and fun-filled activities was on offer to all.

Sarah’s behind our boys

A GLAMOUR model from Oldham used St George’s Day to campaign for our soldiers.

Sarah Longbottom (22) is raising money and awareness for the charity Support Our Soldiers, which gives a helping hand to all our troops and their families as our boys return from service.

Sarah, a Playboy and Page 3 model, has previously raised over £60,000 for various charities with stunts and events and hoped the patriotism of our national day would inspire people to contribute.

The Failsworth stunner said: “It has become known that there is not a lot of help so we are trying our best to raise money for a counselling service that will not only provide help for our troops but also the families.”
