Traffic chaos as a hole shuts Waterloo Street

DRIVERS in Glodwick face a hole lot of trouble after emergency roadworks were ordered.
This large section was excavated on Waterloo Road on Friday after concerns that a pothole had appeared.
Councillor Mohammed Masud reported the problem to highways bosses who branded it dangerous and closed the road to investigate. It is not known when it will reopen
The roadworks, close to the Woodstock Street mini-roundabout, caused chaos as parents picked up their children from near-by Greenhill Primary School.
A train of cars had to reverse along the narrow Marlborough Street as drivers realised that the could not turn on to Waterloo Road.
Councillor Mark Alcock, cabinet member for infrastructure, said: “The report we got was a sunken pothole developing in the ground. It was a big dip in the road, like a massive pool had formed.
“Councillor Masud notified us, we went straight away and we closed the road because it was dangerous.”
One resident said someone had place a tyre in the pothole to prevent cars from driving into it.
She added: “As soon as the cars went over it their tyres would sink.”
