Traditional transport

THE good old days . . . a horse and cart drives through Delph
TRADITIONAL transport ruled the streets of Saddleworth once more during a nostalgic event.
Up to 20 horse and carts, some coming from as far as Sheffield and Rotherham, bustled along village roads to raise money for Oldham Mountain Rescue team.
Les Leech, from Dobcross, came up with the idea after taking part in the cart drive at Beverley in Yorkshire, and decided to emulate its success in Saddleworth.
It took people back to the 1900s when horse and carts were the mode of transport. Enthusiasts embarked on a 12-mile route from Delph and through Denshaw, stopping off along the way at local pubs to fill their collection buckets.
The colourful procession of traps and carts was first held last year and it’s hoped it will become an annual event.
