Christie holds a special place in family’s heart

OLDHAM’S Christie Radiotherapy Centre got a massive £6,800 boost, thanks to the efforts of a handful of fundraisers.

The gift came from Woodside Working Mens’ Club in Middleton, after the wife of one of its members received treatment from the Christie Hospital.

Carole Eyre (64), had radiotherapy and chemotherapy at the Christie after she was diagnosed with a brain tumour two years ago.

Club members rallied round to help Carole and her husband, James, and raised £3,400 with a raft of fundraising events.

The figure was matched by GAP clothing store in Manchester, where James’s daughter and grand-daughter work.

James (66), said; “Everyone at Woodside was fantastic — some of the men even agreed to have their legs and chests waxed to raise money. The Christie is such a special place. The support, treatment and care Carole receives is outstanding.

“We wanted the money raised to go directly to the new centre in Oldham because people from around this area are treated there.”

James, who is recovering from prostate cancer, and Carole have three children, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
