ELECTION 2010
TORY candidate Kamran Ghafoor has complained that a Labour leaflet from Michael Meacher described him as a former member of Labour’s militant group, and a campaigner for the Liberal Democrats before he became a Tory.
Mr Ghafoor, a former Oldham Labour councillor, denies being a militant member and says he never campaigned for the Lib-Dems.
MORE than a dozen families at Heywood House, Eldon Street, Oldham, say polling cards were not delivered to their homes.
Labour workers at Werneth Park polling station complained to police that a man allegedly committed the offence of personation when he used a vote there. Another man recognised him as a St Mary’s Ward voter and alerted election officials.
Estimated results for the turn out in the general election in both Oldham constituencies put Saddleworth South ward at the top of the poll, where 74.3 per cent of the electorate cast their vote. Lowest estimate is 50.7 in Hollinwood.
THE large Oldham turn-out began right from the moment the polling stations opened at 7am. In the first seven hours, a quarter of Oldham voters had used their ballot papers — normally the figure would have been 10 per cent.
ONE of the big Labour scalps which was taken yesterday included former Chadderton Grammar School pupil Vera Baird, the Solicitor General, whose former Redcar constituents chose a Liberal Democrat MP.
EXTRA ballot papers had to be delivered to the Lord Lane polling station in Failsworth because so many people voted.
