THE importance of local newspapers to the coverage of sport has got the backing of a former England footballing great.
Gary Lineker, “Match of the Day” presenter and ex-England striker, said: “This year, I’m backing Local Newspaper Week because of the important role local newspapers play in connecting football clubs across the country with the communities that support them.
“Healthy debate is a crucial part of football and local newspapers provide a platform for everyone involved with a club — owners, managers, players and fans — to voice their opinions on key issues.
“Local newspapers also play an important role in fostering interest, often among young people, in grass roots sports which provide the foundations for sporting achievement in this country.”
His comments are echoed by Alan Hardy, chief executive at Oldham Athletic.
He said: “Oldham is very lucky to have a daily evening newspaper.
“The town and the Chronicle need Oldham Athletic and in turn the club can benefit from a successful evening paper.
“The Chron is able to report on local issues in addition to national matters and is a vital source of news on Latics for many in the town. Long may it continue to be so.”
