Parks quick march to help our troopers
OLDHAMERS are being urged to put their best foot forward in aid of wounded servicemen and women.
Barbara Wilson is spearheading a charity walk around three Chadderton parks — all of which have won Green Flags for their high standards — on the anniversary of D-Day to raise money for Help for Heroes.
Barbara has earned national recognition for her voluntary work to help turnaround Coalshaw Green Park and gives up her free time to run the popular cafe there.
She came up with the idea for the walk while Christmas shopping in Oldham and explained: “I saw a serving soldier with a collecting tin for Help for Heroes.
“As an ex-Army wife, it upset me to see a serving soldier on the street having to collect money for his colleagues.
“I decided there and then ‘I am going to do something for that after Christmas’ and this is what I have come up with.”
A committee was set up to make the idea a reality, with Chaddy Park FC secretary Steve Lynch taking on the same role.
Chadderton Walks For Heroes starts in Coalshaw Green Park at 10am on June 6.
The 9km route takes in Foxdenton and Chadderton Hall parks, but people can walk as far or as little as they want.
Entry costs £10 for adults and £5 for children, and participants will receive a specially struck commemorative medal.
Teams from the police — complete with mascot Constable Cub — and fire brigade are taking part and Barbara added: “We have had quite a considerable amount of interest.
“A lot of application forms have gone out and we are waiting for them to be returned.
“Everybody is saying ‘what a good idea and we are up for it’.
“We just hope and pray we get a good turnout.”
