Robbers fail in bank raid bid

Date published: 21 May 2010

MASKED robbers used a lump of iron to try and smash their way in to a Mossley bank.

The pair targeted the Royal Bank of Scotland in Stamford Road at 11am yesterday, but failed to get their hands on any money.

They tried to break into the safe and cashier area of the bank by repeatedly throwing the iron at the window.

But after several unsuccessful attempts they fled, speeding off in a Vauxhall Zafira in the direction of Manchester Road.

The offenders are described as white men wearing balaclavas and blue overalls. One of them had a stocky build.

Det Con Barbara Offard said: “While nobody was hurt and no money was taken, this was an incident that has left staff shocked.

“The incident shows that you cannot just burst your way into a bank, but we have launched a thorough investigation into this attempted robbery.

“We are appealing for any witnesses to contact us.”

Anyone with any information is asked to call police on 0161-856 9248 or call Crimestoppers on 0800-555 111.
