Stage is set for a celebration

“IN a way it was the love of my life,” reminisces acting veteran Marjorie Simm, a founding member of Uppermill Stage Society.

Now 82, Marjorie, who lives in the village, says she is incredibly proud of the award-winning acting group — celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.

The society started life as a drama group within the Townswomen’s Guild in 1968, when it was based at Saddleworth School. The group was renamed in 1970.

Marjorie said: “I am thrilled to bits that it has reached this landmark, I just don’t know what I would do without it.

“I don’t go on stage now but it was always the one thing I thought I was really good at.”

The group managed to pick up stacks of awards along the way and is celebrating the birthday with a duo of events.

It completed a short run of Noel Coward’s “Blithe Spirit” on Saturday at Uppermill’s Ebenezer Church, while champagne will be flowing at a three-course dinner and dance at Greenfield Conservative Club on June 19.
