Warning over unattended fire
Date published: 24 May 2010
FIRE-FIGHTERS from Mossley spent a sweltering four hours fighting a blaze that got out of hand yesterday.
They had to ferry 3,200 gallons of water to the scene at Lily Lanes, near Hartshead Pike, returning eight times after filling up at a fire hydrant.
Fire-fighter Russ Winterbottom warned people not to light fires and leave them unattended.
They should stay at all times, and have water on hand to put out the fire if necessary, he said.
The person who started yesterday’s fire piled trees and rubbish into a pit in a field, set it on fire, and left it. Fire-fighters had to connect nine lengths of hose to reach the blaze.
