Children waiting for adoption in Oldham get a good service from staff looking for the best outcomes for them, according to the latest review.

The council’s adoption service has been awarded a “good” rating by Ofsted inspectors for its organisational skills, keeping children safe, helping children to achieve and enjoy what they do and helping them make a positive contribution.

The report added: “The service is efficient and well-managed at all levels of the agency.

“Knowledgeable, conscientious and well motivated staff are encouraged and supported in their duties which are carried out to a standard that is clearly focused on better outcomes for children.”

Councillor Kay Knox, former Cabinet member for children, young people and families, said: “Oldham Council is delighted with the outcome of the inspection.

“It shows the borough has a strong adoption service working hard to achieve better outcomes both for children and adopters.

“Choosing to adopt is a big but very rewarding commitment and the council provides as much support and help as possible to young people and their adoptive families.

“Congratulations to everyone involved for delivering this very worthwhile and rewarding service.”

The Ofsted inspection was the first of its kind on the service.

The council is looking to recruit more adopters who, it is keen to point out, come in all different shapes and sizes and from a variety of different backgrounds.

Anyone can apply to adopt regardless of marital status, sexuality, race or religion. It doesn’t matter if they are in work or have a disability.

There is no upper age limit.

Anyone over the age of 21, who has a spare bedroom and could give a child or children a new life, should call 0161-770 6605 or visit the website at www.oldham.gov.uk/adoption and follow the links.
