Young footballers reach national cup final
WATCH out Wembley — a talented team of young footballers from South Failsworth Primary School is heading to the hallowed turf for the final of a national competition.
The Year 10 youngsters have earned the right to represent Oldham Athletic after winning a lengthy series of heats in the six-a-side competition.
They will contest the Football League Community Cup after beating Stockport in the northern final in Huddersfield last month — the 72nd team they have seen off in a remarkable run to Wembley.
The match kicks-off prior to the League One play-off showdown between Millwall and Swindon Town on Saturday.
The Paddock Lane school will face Gateway School, from Buckinghamshire, to become national champions.
Defender George Raynes (11) said: “We’re looking forward to going to Wembley, it’s the excitement of playing at such as famous stadium.
“Hopefully, we will do as well as England did when they beat Mexico on Monday night, but I think it might be a close result.”
Emma-Jane Davies, PE leader from South Failsworth, said: “The boys can’t wait to play at Wembley.
“They’ve been brilliant this season and deserve their chance.”
More than 14,000 youngsters take part in the Community Cup, organised by The Football League Trust, each season.
Head teacher Mike Jones said: “I’m not only very proud of the boys for reaching the national final for the first time in the school’s history but also their effort, determination and attitude.
“A special mention must go to the coach, Dr Stuart Barlow, because he has been coaching football at the school on a voluntary basis for 30 years.
“His commitment to the school is exemplary. I’d also like to thank Latics for their support.”
