Pupils and staff leap into action
PUPILS and teachers teamed up for a host of fundraising events — from a daring abseil to packing bags — in support of brave soldiers.
Youngsters from Year 9 at Counthill School have been raising money since January for the charity Help for Heroes and have collected nearly £1,000.
They took part in a bag packing at Tesco’s and washed teachers’ cars with the help of Amber Watch from Oldham Fire Station, Oldham Mountain Rescue Team and local PCSOs.
Form groups have also baked cakes, taken part in a sponsored silence and ran a name the bear competition.
Not to be outdone, teachers showed their mettle with seven staff members abseiling down the school’s clock tower with the help of Castleshaw outdoor centre.
In total, pupils and staff raised £990 for the charity, which helps wounded servicemen and women.
A cheque was presented to Major Mike McDonald and Michael Fisher, an ex-pupil who is a Military Police officer and has served in Afghanistan.
Alison Taylor, from the Year 9 pastoral team, said: “We are very proud of what the pupils have achieved and of all their hard work. I would like to thank all those who have supported us in raising the money.”
