Gets worse before it gets better: today a pile of rubble, but soon a supermarket
GREENFIELD’S iconic Knoll Mill is now nothing more than a pile of rubble after the bulldozers did their job.
Tesco has plans to build a 25,000ft supermarket on the site but the development has made slow progress.
Plans for the store faced a barrage of opposition when they were revealed but locals were unsuccessful in opposing them at a public inquiry and permission was granted in 2005.
The potential supermarket has split opinion with local shops saying it will wipe out trade, while some shoppers are fed-up of having to drive to Oldham.
There were complaints that the stone structure had become a derelict eyesore but now it’s been flattened passers-by can see the scenery between Chew Valley Road and Wiggett Construction’s latest development Heron’s Reach at the rear.
