TWO local hair stylists proved they were a cut above the rest when they claimed prizes in a prestigious hairdressing competition.

Helen Keegan Walker was named as overall winner in Oldham College’s 2010 Hair Dressing Photoshoot Level Three competition.

And Katie Wharmby came second in the Magical and Mystical Theme category.

Helen’s talents were tested to the limit when she had to create her own “complete look,” which included clothes, make-up, and a unique cutting-edge hair style and colour in two categories to snip the winning title.

Back at work as floor manager at Premier Hair and Beauty Salon in Lees, Helen (24) said: “I take my profession very seriously, so I am delighted at being this year’s overall winner.”

Katie, who studies alongside Helen at Oldham College, is also learning as an apprentice at the newly-opened Love Hair Love Beauty salon in Mossley.

Owner Nicola Young said: “Katie is rapidly establishing a loyal client base and the customers love her. Having an advanced apprentice doing so well in a hairdressing competition is a real bonus for the salon. Well done, Katie.”

Katie (19) added: “I couldn’t believe it when I was awarded second place.

“I was up against other students from Oldham College, so it was tough.

“I would like to thank my employer, Love Hair Love Beauty, and my tutors at Oldham College for their support and encouragement.”
