Take-aways: how does yours score?

Date published: 09 June 2010

WORLD CUP WEEK:

Residents across Oldham can log on and see how good their takeaway food is.

Millions are expected to sit down in front of the TV and support England with a take-away, or grab food in a pub while soaking up the atmosphere.

Oldham Council is among 104 councils across the country which publish details on how clean the kitchens are. The new Government are urging more councils to follow Oldham’s lead so people can know the score when they order their take out or choose a pub. Every year councils inspect thousands of food outlets but the information is not always made easily available.

FOOTBALL fans can embrace their patriotic side and have their face painted in England’s colours for the World Cup at Spindles. There will be World Cup themed activities every Saturday until the tournament ends. On Saturday, June 26 and July 10 there will be face-painting sessions and on June 19 and July 3 and 17 there will be footie-themed craft workshops. All the events are free.

FOOTBALL fans are being urged to drink sensibly as North West Ambulance Service gears up for the World Cup.

When England played in the previous 2006 tournament, the ambulance service received up to 17 per cent more calls on weekend match days. Attendances at hospital emergency departments in the region rose by a third on England match days.

Alternative players

Anyone who fancies an escape from the World Cup this weekend can catch a performance of “Friends and Neighbours” by local amateur group, Just Us Players.

On Friday and also Saturday when England play their first game against the USA, Just Us Players will celebrate their 30th anniversary with the comdy play at Greenacres Community Centre, Galland Street.

Tickets are available on the night or by calling 01457 870559.

Every little’s a big help

LATICS players helped Chadderton Tesco staff prepare for some World Cup-themed fund raising.

The footballers joined mascot Chaddy the Owl in visiting the store to show their support for the campaign, which is raising money for children’s cancer charity CLIC Sargent — Tesco Charity of the Year 2010.

Staff are organising a variety of activities for its World Cup Week which is being held from June 14-21.
