A YOUNG swimmer has plunged head-first into a charity challenge in aid of Cancer Research UK.
Sally Bray, 10 today, donned her cozzie and goggles to swim 72 lengths at Crompton Pool — a full mile.
The year five pupil at East Crompton St George’s School decided to organise the sponsored swim after her aunt, Angela Garvey, was diagnosed with neck cancer.
With her aunt now recovering from treatment, Sally decided to raise money for Cancer Research UK by completing as many lengths as possible in an hour, aiming for about 60.
But the swift swimmer managed to complete a whole mile.
Her mother Julie Gittins (48) said: “This was something she organised all by herself.
“She arranged it herself, emailed relatives about it and called Cancer Research UK for the sponsor pack.
“Her aunt, my sister, went to the pool to watch her and she was really pleased at the effort Sally had gone to. Sally loved it, she really enjoyed it and was very proud to have raised money.”
And the charitable effort isn’t over yet. Donations are still being pledged in a bid to bump up the £305 already collected.
She said: “Thank-you to everyone. I am very tired!”
Donations can still be made online at www.justgiving.com/sallybraysponsoredswim.
