Blackspot road’s extra warnings
Date published: 15 June 2010
ONE of Oldham’s most dangerous roads is to get new safety features.
A speed camera was installed in Milnrow Road, Shaw, in 2005, but there were still 15 accidents from February, 2006, to January, 2009, with six resulting in serious injury or death.
The council sent out a consultation letter on the safety proposals to more than 700 households in the area asking for their views.
Residents were also able to visit an information stand at Crompton Library and talk to engineers at an exhibition.
Following feedback a number of changes were made to the proposals for each section of the carriageway.
The final scheme includes warning signs and improved road markings close to the Jubilee pub, the cutting back of trees in gardens close to busy junctions and improved lighting.
A right-turn lane will be introduced at the Buckstones Road junction and a bus stop will be moved to a safer place.
A vehicle-activated “slow down” sign will be installed close to the Bridge Street junction and a central island will be placed near Smallbrook Road.
